S.S. Keewatin

About IT! Lecture Series
S.S. Keewatin
Saugatuck Center for the Arts
Downtown Saugatuck
7:00 pm

The 350-foot-long, century-old Great Lakes passenger ship the S.S. Keewatin has long been a point of interest in Saugatuck and Douglas.

The SS KEEWATIN is a historic passenger liner that is 5 years older than the Titanic and she was built in Scotland in 1905 for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. She was one of a fleet of five ships designed  specifically to connect Eastern Canada with Western Canada by using the Great Lakes. The Keewatin is truly a marvel because she has managed to survive for 105 years. She is known only by those who love her, worked on her or traveled on her as in her 60 years of carrying passengers she never lost a life!
She cruised for over 100 years from  Port McNicoll Ontario just an hour north of the largest Canadian city Toronto. As of June 23rd 2012 she will be the prized possession of the citizens of the region and available to be explored and enjoyed. How she managed to survive, the people who are responsible for her presence in this century are all in the chapters of this web site. Join in and be part of a story of the sea, the story of Keewatin and all those who have crewed her and kept her for over a century.

All of us here in Saugatuck and Douglas will miss the old gal!

Join us for a discussion on what the future holds for this iconic vessel with Eric Conroy.

Asparagus

Thought this would be a timely tasty recipe considering the season.

Silvana of Tuscany's Ti penso sempre Asparagus

Don't even ask what Uncle William and his camel Mr. Thirsty were doing in the middle of Cadibona Pass/Apennines Mountains in the wilds of northern Italy, he says he was visiting with the beautiful Italian Duchess Silvana of Tuscany whom he met and fell in love with years ago and said it was a wonderful opportunity to pick the some wild asparagus with her-what was Mr. Thirsty doing all the while-mountain cameling ? The Duchess gave him one of her grandmother's favorite recipes, which in turn he blessed us with; we'll call these Silvana of Tuscany's Ti penso sempre Asparagus.

Ingredients

1 pound of tender medium sized asparagus
2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 and a half Tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 freshly grated lemon rind
Sea salt (ground) and freshly ground black pepper

Preparation

Rinse the asparagus thoroughly, break off any tough, white bottoms and discard. Cut into 1.5-inch sections, slicing the asparagus at a slight diagonal.
Fill a medium sized saucepan half way with water, bring to a boil, add the asparagus and reduce heat slightly to a simmer. Parboil the asparagus for exactly 2 minutes. Drain the hot water. While the asparagus are still hot, toss them in a bowl with the olive oil, Parmesan, and lemon rind. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or room temperature.

Holland Museum Postcard Exhibition

Postcards at an Exhibition

Love postcards, love to send em, love to receive em and love to buy em in foreign countries and on holiday.

Through August 5 in the Focus Gallery, The Holland Museum is exhibiting Wish You Were Here: Selections from the Mike Van Ark Postcard Collection. American postcards were created as an easier way to send quick notes and were printed only by the U.S. Postal Service until May 1898. The first postcards were called "private mailing cards" and cost one penny to send. The first souvenir postcard was created in 1893 to advertise the World's Fair in Chicago. Van Ark began collecting in the 1970s, by adding to his mother's collection. After attending shows in Michigan and Chicago, his collection soon reached 5,000 cards. For more info, call 888-200-9123 or visit the Holland Museum.

Sherwood Forest Bed and Breakfast - Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm

Looking for a great sunny day getaway today.
Head over to Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm. Enjoy the ambiance of this 1890’s farm estate, complete with an authentically restored barn which houses Khnemu Studio.  Treat yourself to the creative energy of art work made by regionally and nationally known artists.  The gallery artists create functional handmade pottery, art pottery and other fine craft.

Experience the beauty of the resident farm animals including peacocks, ducks and free-range exotic chickens, cool happy cattle and you can enjoy some awesome fresh organic popcorn too.

Plus, they have a couple of the hippest friendliest sheep dogs you'll ever meet.

Plus while your in the area, you can have lunch at Cranes Pie Pantry (best pies on the planet-well, maybe not as good as my Aunt Mabel's), then head over to Salt of the Earth for Dinner (great wood fired pizza oven-home made crust-sauce and sausage).
