Good Morning Douglas and Saugatuck, Michigan.
Today in West Michigan! Scattered showers. Cloudy, with a high near 56. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
Here at Sherwood Forest Bed and Breakfast, with the forecast calling for rain for a few days, here's a few indoor suggestions.
Antiquing, bowling, take a hike along the lake, hit the Singapore Bank Bookstore for a great book, have lunch at Phil's Grill in Saugatuck.
This weekend is the 2009 Goose Festival Silver Anniversary October 9th, 10th & 11th, Fennville, Michigan
Here's a recipe to go with those delicious apples that are appearing everywhere this time of year!
Rudy's Favorite Applesauce
After picking apples with Rudy, we discovered this great concoction (you can use other apple combinations).
8 Granny Smith and
8 Jonathan Apples, cored, peeled, and chopped
1/4 Cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 Cup brown sugar
Place all ingredients in large pan and cook on medium heat, stirring frequently, approx. 30 minutes (until apples are soft), then use potato masher to mash apples. Let cool then refrigerate.
If you don't mind pickin apples in the rain or if it lets up for a moment, head to Cranes Orchards, just one of West Michigan's U-Pick Apple Orchards (they might have some peaches left), is less than 7 miles from our front door. They have 14 different varieties, such as Gala, Macintosh, Honey Crisp, Cortland, Golden Supreme, Jonagold, Empire, Jonathans, Ida Reds, Golden Delicious, Mutsu, Red Delicious, Fuji, and Braeburn. For more info, call 269-561-8651 or visit http://www.craneorchards.com And there's also Earl's U-Pick Farm--through October 15, you can pick red or gold raspberries. For more info, call 269-227-2074 or visit http://www.earlsberries.com.
Breakfast this morning is Scrambled eggs with cheese, Zucchini Chocolate bread and banana bran muffins, fresh fruit salad, and of course Italian Espresso organic coffee (yes-free trade too).
