The name jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had: a candle inside of a hollowed turnip.

JUST SCARY ENOUGH FOR ALL AGES. The Red Barn Haunted House runs from 7 PM until 10 PM. This weekend, The Wavecrest Robotics Team is spotlighting classic Halloween characters we all know … vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, ghouls, goblins and monsters of all types . . . as well as some brand new scarier beasts.
Why not hit the Haunted Saugatuck Dunes State Park and take a long walk through the woods, (watch for for the Goblins) it will be just beautiful. The leaves are sporting some beautiful colors you won't want to miss. Take a walk along the lakeshore, Have lunch at Ida Reds, get there early though, they close at 2:00 p.m.
One of the last weekends to see the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Societies Museum exhibit, located across form Mount Baldy-this years exhibit is pretty cool-this years exhibit traces (100 years of dead people) on what it's like to live in a summer beach town.
U-Pick Still time to pick some (remember the Witch who gave the apple to Snow White) apples, head to Crane's Orchards, just one of West Michigan's U-Pick Apple Orchards (they might have some peaches left), is less than 7 miles from our front door. October picks are Pioneer Macintosh, Cortland, Empire, Jonathan, Ida Red, Jonagold, Matsu, and Red and Golden Delicious. For more info, call 269-561-8651
Saturday-Broadway star Karen Mason comes to Mason Street Warehouse (where they used to house the dead from the Spanish Flu) for A Night On Broadway, performing songs from stage hits including Chicago, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Sunset Boulevard, Mamma Mia! Funny Girl and many more.
Saturday-FALL FUNFEST DAY-11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. in Coghlin Park, Saugatuck. pumpkin carving (done by deceased Hobbits) , Pumpkin launch, pie eating. Food vendors, Band, Tug of War.
Breakfast this morning is Breakfast this morning is Cheese and Potato Egg bake, fresh fruit salad and Zucchini Chocolate bread. Of course Italian Espresso organic coffee (yes-free trade too).
EYE BALL COOKIES
5 ounces white baking chocolate, chopped, divided
20 to 25 vanilla wafers
Blue paste food coloring
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Red liquid food coloring
In a microwave, melt 4 ounces of white chocolate; stir until smooth. Dip vanilla wafers in melted chocolate; allow excess to drip off. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Chill until set. Melt remaining white chocolate; stir until smooth. Tint blue. Spread a small amount onto the center of each cookie; place a chocolate chip in the center. For bloodshot eyes, use a toothpick dipped in red food coloring to draw lines from blue circles to outer edges of wafers. Chill until set. Store in an airtight container. Yield: 20-25 servings.
