Mt. Baldhead Challenge
Mt. Baldhead Challenge...13th annual
Runners, walkers and nature buffs are invited to sign up for one of Michigan's "most interesting races," the Mt. Baldhead Challenge in Saugatuck-Douglas September 8, 2012.
"Where else can you climb 283 steps up a giant sand dune midway through a 15K run?" asked Michigan Runner magazine in recognizing the benefit road and trail race 11 years ago.
"If that doesn't take your breath, the view will," it said.
The steps, which have since been rebuilt, now number 302. The course has added loops through the wooded Ox-Bow Art School and Oval Beach on Lake Michigan, making it more memorable yet.
"This is a one-of-a-kind event," said co-race director Jackie Jacobson-Beland of the Saugatuck-Douglas Chapter of Rotary International. "When our new club had the opportunity to help the former race organizers, we were excited."
"The more we explore the course, the more amazed we are by its beauty and possibilities," said co-race director Aaron Sheridan. "There is nothing else like this anywhere," he said.
The Challenge, in its 13th year, will start and end at Beery Field on the corner of Center and Main streets in downtown Douglas. It includes a free "Little Feet, Big Feat" children's fun run there during packet pickups Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday's 15K (9.3-mile) title race at 8 a.m. and a 5K (3.1-mile) race 15 minutes later.
Entry fees of $25 for the 15K and $20 for the 5K through Sept. 5, then $30 and $25 respectively up to race time, entitle entrants to custom t-shirts, on-course aid stations and support, awards for top men and women overall and age-group finishers, post-race food and drinks, plus more.
The race also seeks volunteers. "Rotary's motto is, 'Service above self,"' said Beland. "Your time commitment will be small compared to the impact you will have on making the race more enjoyable for the participants, other volunteers and the community.
"Most important, we want you to have fun!" Beland said.
