LaPerriere worked for 6 years as sous chef at Biba's before leaving to study at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and graduated number one in his class. He worked with chef Mark Miller at Red Sage in Washington, D.C., studying Southwestern Cuisine; he was sous chef at Mustards Grill in Napa Valley; and he was owner and executive chef at Enotria Cafe and Wine Bar in North Sacramento (earning and maintaining a four-star review). This picture is from a guest (thanks Tim and Stephanie) who was hiking at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park. They said the deer was running up to the water, when the waves came in would beach, they deer would run up the sand. Kept doing this until it's big brother or sister came and retrieved it. Gotta love mother nature and all the creatures big and small.

We'll it seems that our wandering neighbor wanted to use the outhouse, original to the house-circa 1906, we had to explain it was no longer in use, in case your wondering (now just a storage shed). A short conversation ensued...the weather, global warming, what we planned on putting out for his family to eat in the middle of winter-he had a shopping list for us-no baked goods. I think the deer are a bit spoiled.

There are some great Michigan U-Pick's about 8 miles or less from our front door; Earl's U-Pick Farm is one of them. Through August, you can pick raspberries, such as Laurens and Chester's. Then at Krupka's Blueberry Plantation, beginning in early July, blueberries will be in season, with the Dukes, and then the delicious Jerseys will be ready after that. Dutch Arcadia: 19th Century Romantic Landscapes Exhibition, Holland MI

Enjoy the selection of lush masterpiece landscapes from the Beekhuis collection in the Wichers Gallery at the Holland Museum located in downtown Holland MI. These scenes feature real and idealized views of the eastern portion of the Netherlands. You will be surprised how much the views resemble West Michigan. The Exhibition runs through September 25, 2011.

Other than that, for luch today, how about heading over to Phils Bar and Grill in Saugatuck MI, They have one of the best burgers for miles around, great salads and some good drafts on tap.

Take me out to the Ball game, if your a Cubs, fan. You'll remember Harry Carrey belting out that tune during the 7th inning stretch. Fast forward-oops, I mean rewind 100-150 years and you'll most likely see the ancestors of the Douglas Dutchers, who were fashioned after a local club, the Douglas Athletic League, which first played in 1905. They've been swinging the bat's since 2003. Game time 2:00 p.m. Admission is free and remember Root Root Root for the nome team, if they don't win it's a shame, for it's one, two three strikes yrrr out at the ol ball game.

Saugatuck Center for the Arts-The Legacy of the Saugatuck Douglas Art Club

Beginning in the early 50’s, the Saugatuck/Douglas Art Club has nourished and encouraged the creation, examination and presentation of the performing and creative arts. These purveyors of extraordinary altruistic values have shown a spotlight on our area's rich cultural heritage, uniqueness magic. They have and continue to support freedom of artistic expression and freedom. As a result, the Art Club has served as an incubator, sponsor, and supporter of both artists and new arts organizations in its artistically vibrant hometowns of Saugatuck and Douglas.

This retrospective exhibition is a celebration of the legacy of the Saugatuck/Douglas Art Club. Begun as a way for artists young and old alike to support each other during the winter months in Michigan, the club has grown into a vibrant arts organization that has gifted nearly $200,000 in scholarship money, supporting local students who wish to continue their education in the arts.

We encourage you, your family and friends to see this wonderful exhibition at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts and runs through August 8, 2011. Located at 400 Culver Street, downtown Saugatuck.

June 16, Movie night at the Saugatuck Douglas Public Library

Filmed in 1952 and Directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.

In Africa during WW1, a gin-swilling riverboat owner/captain is persuaded by a strait-laced missionary to use his boat to attack an enemy warship.

This great classic has everything you could ask for - two fine stars who could carry the show by themselves, and a story full of adventure, drama, humor, and romance. It's a lot of fun to watch, and it is also a film you can admire for the expert way it was put together.

Bogart and Hepburn not only give great performances, they are also wonderful together, and they make the on-screen relationship between their characters believable and interesting - it's great to watch as it develops. The adventures that they find are that much more entertaining for the way that you come to care about them. The story itself is exciting, too, with a lot of ups and downs for the heroes. Topping it off are the wonderful settings, with a lot of fine shots of wild animals and jungle scenery - there is always plenty to look at, and it also sets off the action nicely.

Thursday Night Film Series at the Saugatuck-Douglas District Library, 7 pm. Admission is free. Free Popcorn, Courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

Summertime Market, great spot to pick up some local produce, meats, cheese and the like.

Mermaid Bar and Grill, nice spot to have lunch along the river, good people watching and great Margarita's too.

The beach, say no more, it's a great day to hang out, work on your tan, take a long walk along the white sandy shoreline and then about 9:15, the sunset arrives and maybe even a wee bit of romance.

Red Barn Theatre, Saugatuck Michigan, The Play These Shining Lives

The Red Barn Theatre in Saugatuck is producing the powerful and engaging new drama “These Shining Lives” tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Written by Melanie Marnich, the play tells the true and tragic story of four of the the radium girls, young women in the 1920’s and ‘30’s who hand-painted the numbers on the faces of clocks and watches with radium paint and who all got terminally ill and lost their jobs when they could no longer work. In this play, the women are first told that the radium is safe, then, when finally told what was happening to their bodies, make the decision to not go away quietly but rather make a little noise.

Playing the role of Catherine Donohue is Molly Coyle, a freshman theater major at Hope College. Her three co-workers, Charlotte Purcell, Frances O’Connell and Pearl Payne are played by Vicki Kavanaugh, Katelyn Hemmeke and Vicki Janik, respectively. Kavanaugh has appeared in a number of Red Barn productions, while both Hemmeke and Janik are appearing in a second show at the Barn after debuting in last year’s Neil Simon comedy “Rumors.”

Ralph Hoffman, another “Rumors” veteran, will play Catherine’s husband Tom, and Chris Knoll, a veteran of three Red Barn shows, will play Rufus Reed, the company’s supervisor.

Rounding out the cast and playing a variety of roles are Erik Keener and John Hoogeveen. Keener has appeared in two previous Red Barn shows, and John has taken roles in numerous plays produced by the Hamilton Community Theatre group. Al Ver Schure is directing “These Shining Lives.” He has directed or co-directed three Red Barn shows, including “Rumors” and “Always …, Patsy Cline, “after a directing career at Hamilton High School, where he directed more than 60 plays and musicals. The show’s assistant director is Denise Colley, and the producer of all Red Barn shows is Patricia Knox Huyge.

Performance dates for “These Shining Lives” are 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday; and the following week at 7:30 p.m. on June 3 and 4; and at 2 p.m. on June 5. Seats are all reserved, and tickets will be sold for $15; $12 for seniors, students and Lakeshore Arts Alliance members. Group discounts are also available. This is a true story of four of the many women who worked at the Radium Dial Company in Ottawa, Illinois in the 1920’s. Unaware of the risk, these workers paint the glow-in-the-dark faces on watches utilizing radium. Women are voting, smoking in public and joining the workforce. Having a well-paying job in a challenging economy brings independence and validation. Later, suspecting that something isn't quite right, the women struggle to not lose the freedom, security and camaraderie of employment. These Shining Lives uses a tragedy in history to illustrate the strong bonds of marriage and friendship. Admission: $15 for adults/$12 for seniors and students. Heading for a newly inherited island, Laurel and Hardy are shipwrecked and marooned desert island which has just emerged from the sea. Along with their cook, a stowaway and a girl who is fleeing her fiancé, they set up their own government on the atoll. Uranium is discovered and world powers begin fighting over ownership of the island. Made in 1950 in France, was the last film Laurel and Hardy produced.

Rain and I don't mind

The rain last night was awesome, 3.5 inches.... The maple leaves doubled in size, the creek in the backyard was flowing like a river too. Even though I want it to be sunny skies, warm days and cool nights, mother earth needs the fresh water rain gives it. We need some good soakings for the May flowers to keep going. The Azaleas are about to pop, the Ornamental Peach tree is in full bloom, The Magnolia in the side yard is ripe with blossums and once again all is good here at Sherwood Forest Bed and Breakfast.

This is a great planet to hang out on, lets all enjoy it and may the air we breathe the water we drink and the food chain be safe forever more. Come on over and hang out with us for a few days if you get the chance, it's always nice here at the Sherwood Forest bed and Breakfast.

Holland Michigan, Tulip Time Festival, Klompen Dancing

You won't want to miss Holland Michigan's Tulip Time Festivals Klompen Dancing. Time is 7:00 p.m., tonight encircling Centennial Park downtown Holland. Historically the Klompers began in 1935 with high school girls dressed up in traditional (they still do and some boys join them now) costumes dancing the old country's (the Netherlands) folk dances (they still do). Today accompanying the local high school kids are veteran Klompen dances which definitely add something special to the atmosphere of excitement. Some traditional costumes were delft blue with white organdy caps and aprons. You absolutely will not want to miss any of this action. It's wacky, fun and free.

Holland Michigan, Tulip Time Festival

Tulip Time Festival
Can you believe it? The third largest festival in the United States is just 15 miles north of Saugatuck/Douglas. The Tulip Time Festival dates back to 1929, and you can still experience some of the same traditional shows that started more than 75 years ago. From May 7-14, there will be Klompen dancers who perform Dutch folk dances, and of course you can tour Windmill Island (Queen Beatrice did) with an original working windmill. The grand finale of the festival will be the Muziekparade at 2 p.m. on May 11, with nearly 50 bands, giant helium-filled balloons, and so many floats you'll lose count. Saving an Indigo Blue Bunting

We are trying to nurse a Indigo Blue Bunting back to flying speed, found the little critter on the road yesterday. Looked like it broke it's wing. Had an old antique cage in the garage, gave it some food and water. Talked to it for a while and then it was bed time for the night. This morning it looked ok, not scared at all, was able to hold it in my had too. Called some organizations about rehab for wold birds, none available except for raptor types. Hope you persevere Mr. or Ms. Indigo Blue Bunting...God Speed.

Looking for a great place to have dinner, Everyday People Cafe in Douglas MI is one of our favorites on the planet (we have others too). They have an awesome Gorgonzola Pork Chop, one of the best Ahi Tuna's I've ever had and a niceeeee Salmon. Really, really good deserts like Creme Brulee, Flour-less Chocolate Torts and Gellato. They strive to utilize local products whenever possible and the staff is friendly courteous and attentive. Sharp wine list, great beer list. You'd have a smile on your face when you've finished your meal. On Saturdays and Sundays they offer a Bubbles & Bites, Champagne - Bloody Mary,Lunch & Raw Bar, peel and eat shrimp, oysters, crab cakes (of course you can get a burger if you want). Champaign by the glass or bottle and if your feeling a wee bit a pain from the night before-a Bloody Mary. Open 7 days a week, out door patio in-season. You'll definitely dig it. April Gardening and what to plant.

According to the Farmers Almanac and the the website Garden Helper, here's a small list of planting, weeding and transplanting. Plant til the end of April. Carrots, turnips, beets, onions and radishes, lettuce, asparagus, peas and potatoes . Good time for root crops and Vine crops such as Strawberry's. Time to kill briars, weeds, poison ivy and other plant pests. Just a wee bit of a tip.

We are still in Earth Day mode here at the bed and breakfast, we don't have an awesome garden, we do support our locallaly grown farmers at the farmers market in the Saugatuck Center for the Arts in Saugatuck on Fridays and Mondays. We purchase organic whenever possible most of our produce coems from withing a 30 mile radius in the summer season.

Earth Day 2011

Help the planet by being one of the people contributing to A Billion Acts of Green! When each one of us does one simple act in our community and our friends and neighbors do one simple act in theirs. Collectively when compounded across borders and oceans, we can make a difference. Whether it be something as simple as washing laundry in cold water. Picking up trash along the street, hang your clothes on a clothes line, plant a tree, walk ride or use public transportation. Reusable shopping bags, plant a garden, eat organic. Eat locally gown food, switch off the tap while brushing, take shorter showers. The list is endless. Re-purpose, use rechargeable batteries, turn your computer off when not using it, lower the heat in your house at night by 2 degrees. These things and more, A Billion Acts of Green can make out planet healthy for millions of years to come. In everything we do, we have an impact. Remember we are all in it together. One of the best websites I've found dedicated to this purpose is Earthday.org

Awarded by the British Film Institute to be one of the Best 100 Films of the 20th Century that were culturally British. The film Narcissus portrays a psychological drama of a small group of Anglican nuns who travel to the Palace of Mopu in the remoteness of the Himalayas in India to evangelize and teach the followings of the Church. Finding themselves seduced by the sensuality of the beautiful Shangri La surroundings and the men who are in charge of the area, old pre pre-church romances are thought about and temptation is tested. The subplot invites a romance with local Indian Prince with a lower caste dancing girl.

Written by Rumor Godden and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, starring Deborah Kerr, Sabu and Flora Robson.

This film won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Cinematography also the Academy Award for Best Art Direction

Red Barn Theatre hosts the Film The Robe

Join John Hardy at The Red Barn Theatre in Saugatuck, Michigan as he hosts the movie The Robe (1953). Starring Richard Burton and Victor Mature. The film follows Marcellus Gallio (Burton), a Roman soldier who oversees the crucifixion of Jesus Christ during the reign of Tiberius Caesar Augustus the Roman Emperor. Marcellus wins Jesus's Robe in a dice game being played by the watchful soldiers. Nightmares and hallucinations beget Marcellus as he tries to get rid of the robe though his slave Demetrius (Mature). Events unwind as time unfolds.

It was directed by Henry Koster and produced by Frank Ross adapted from the book written by Lloyn C. Douglas.

This movie won Academy Award Oscars for Best Set Direction, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, it was also nominated for Best Actor and Cinematography and Best Picture. The show is a compilation of Old Time Radio shows with sound effects, live music and commercials. Special winter doldrums price of only $10 admission. The Haunting

Long ago during the so called dark-ages in Saugatuck and Douglas, there was a Cabal known as the Watchers, they kept to themselves high up on a wooded hill overlooking the two villages. Sometimes under a full moon, you could hear screams emanating from their direction, sometimes the hill would be shrouded in mist on a sunny day. Then one day the house on the hill was just gone. There is a rumor that they quietly joined the ranks of locals who live here and to this day, over 100 years later, there are certain people who never seem to age. Sometimes late at night on the eve of the Festival of the Dead, a young couple will go missing and somehow tow people in town seem to get younger.

Don't forget to walk along the beach late at night and you can hear the cries of lost sailors who went to davy jones locker or do you just hear a lone seagull or two.

This remarkable exhibition showcases works by painters both known and unknown who fell in love with the communities of Saugatuck and Douglas and made them (the dunes, water, forest, buildings, and boats) their studio.

Exhibitions

The award-winning Saugatuck-Douglas Museum has unveiled its 2010 exhibit: A Place Called Ox-Bow: 100 Years of Connecting Art, Nature, and People. Saugatuck's "Ox-Bow" is a site of many human and natural wonders: culture, nature, landscape, and waterscape, all unfolding from the Lake Michigan shoreline to the Kalamazoo River and the old Village of Saugatuck. This exhibit is about how for a century the Ox-Bow School has been a bridge between nature and art for thousands of people, comprising an important chapter in the history of the lakeshore and its dunes. This exhibit is open daily, noon to 4 p.m., until Labor Day, and on the weekends only in the fall. Admission is free. The weekend was awesome, had to decide whether to attend "Dancing for the Arts" or see Jimmy Dillon in Concert at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. The rock concert won out, went with some good friends. Played "Mighty Long Road, River Song and Mona Lisa" -some of my fav's! Some great new tunes, the man jammed! Place was almost packed to full capacity (400). Not bad for a guy who had played backup with John Lee Hooker, Clarence Clemons and Bruce Springsteen..... Also local fav's Mark Schrock and Mad Cat........Thanks for the show!
